WhatsApp Business API Cost in India
3 Real Monthly Bill Examples

The rate card tells you the price per message. It doesn't tell you what you'll actually pay. Here's the real monthly math for three different business types, using Meta's own published rates.

Short answer: a small business sending mostly transactional/utility messages (appointment reminders, order updates) typically pays ₹100–₹500/month in WhatsApp message costs. A business running regular marketing broadcasts to a large list can run into the thousands, because marketing templates are priced roughly 7.5x higher than utility templates and get no volume discount. The three worked examples below show exactly why.

The rates these examples use

Meta bills per delivered template message, in Indian rupees, based on the template's category. These are the live India rates as of this guide's last update:

CategoryRate per messageTypical use
Marketing₹0.8631Promotional offers, sale announcements, re-engagement campaigns
Utility₹0.115Order confirmations, appointment reminders, delivery updates
Authentication₹0.115OTPs, login verification codes

Replies you send within an open 24-hour customer service window (the customer messaged you first) are free, regardless of category. See the full WhatsApp API Pricing guide for the complete rate card, free-message rules and volume tiers — this post focuses only on what those rates add up to in practice.

Example 1 — a local salon or clinic sending appointment reminders

Assumptions: 500 appointment reminders/month (utility) + 200 promotional offer messages/month (marketing) to a loyalty list.

Message typeVolume/monthRateCost
Appointment reminders (utility)500₹0.115₹57.50
Promotional offers (marketing)200₹0.8631₹172.62
Total WhatsApp message cost₹230.12/month

This is the most common profile for a small service business: mostly free-tier-adjacent volume, a small marketing push. The message cost is a rounding error next to the subscription plan itself.

Example 2 — a D2C e-commerce store running monthly sales

Assumptions: 3,000 order confirmations/month (utility) + a monthly sale broadcast to a 5,000-contact list (marketing).

Message typeVolume/monthRateCost
Order confirmations (utility)3,000₹0.115₹345.00
Monthly sale broadcast (marketing)5,000₹0.8631₹4,315.50
Total WhatsApp message cost₹4,660.50/month

This is where the marketing-vs-utility price gap actually matters: the 5,000-message broadcast alone costs almost 19x more than the 3,000 order confirmations, despite lower volume, purely because of category pricing. A store that grows its list without segmenting who gets marketing broadcasts vs. transactional-only messages will see this line grow faster than revenue if the broadcasts aren't converting.

Example 3 — a clinic with patient portal login

Assumptions: 800 appointment reminders/month (utility) + 300 patient login OTPs/month (authentication).

Message typeVolume/monthRateCost
Appointment reminders (utility)800₹0.115₹92.00
Patient login OTPs (authentication)300₹0.115₹34.50
Total WhatsApp message cost₹126.50/month

Utility and authentication are priced identically, so a business that never sends marketing templates — purely transactional and login flows — stays in the same low band regardless of volume growth, until volume gets genuinely large.

What actually moves your bill

  • Marketing volume, not total volume. As the e-commerce example shows, marketing messages dominate the bill even at lower counts than utility messages, because the per-message rate is roughly 7.5x higher.
  • Whether you're replying inside an open service window. A customer-initiated conversation lets you reply free-form and free for 24 hours — businesses that route support through WhatsApp instead of sending fresh outbound templates spend less than the raw rate card suggests.
  • List segmentation. Sending marketing broadcasts only to contacts who've engaged recently, rather than a full list every time, is the single biggest lever on the marketing line without reducing reach where it matters.
  • The subscription plan is separate from message cost. A LigiComms plan (₹599–₹2,599/month) covers the platform, team seats and unlimited social posting — WhatsApp messages are billed separately, per message, from a prepaid wallet, with automatic refunds on delivery failure.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a minimum monthly WhatsApp API spend?

No. You only pay for messages you actually send and that are actually delivered — there's no minimum commitment or monthly platform fee for the API itself (separate from your subscription plan, which is billed regardless of message volume).

Do failed messages get billed?

No. Billing is per delivered message. If a message fails to deliver, it isn't charged — and on LigiComms specifically, any credit already deducted for a failed send is automatically refunded to your wallet.

Why is marketing so much more expensive than utility?

Meta prices by intent, not by content length or complexity. Marketing templates are priced to reflect that they're unsolicited outbound (even to opted-in users), while utility and authentication messages are tied to a specific transaction the user already initiated or expects.
