WhatsApp Template Rejected?
Checklist to Fix It Fast

You don't need the full approval tutorial right now — you need to know why this template failed and what to change before you resubmit. Match your rejection to the row below.

Short answer: find your rejection reason in the table below, apply the fix, and submit as a brand-new template — Meta does not allow editing and resubmitting a rejected template under the same name. For the full end-to-end approval process (not just fixing a rejection), see the complete Template Approval guide.

Diagnostic table — match your rejection reason to the fix

Rejection reasonWhat's actually wrongFix
Wrong categoryContent doesn't match Marketing / Utility / Authentication as declaredRe-read the category definitions — if it's promoting an offer, it's Marketing even if it also confirms an order; when in doubt, pick Marketing
Aggressive promotional languageALL CAPS, multiple exclamation marks, "!!!", "BUY NOW"-style urgency phrasingRewrite in normal sentence case, one exclamation mark maximum, no artificial urgency
Shortened or non-branded URLbit.ly, tinyurl, or any link that doesn't resolve to your own registered domainUse your full, branded domain URL — no link shorteners, no redirects through third-party domains
Missing personalisation variableTemplate reads as generic mass content rather than a specific transaction/messageAdd at least one {{1}}-style variable — a name, order number or date — even for otherwise-generic content
Character limit exceededBody text over 1,024 charactersTrim to under 1,024 characters; move detail to a linked page instead of the message body
Duplicate or near-duplicate templateAn identical or near-identical template already exists and was approved/rejectedCheck your existing template list first; edit meaningfully or reuse the approved one instead of resubmitting a near-copy
Prohibited content categoryContent relates to a restricted category (gambling, certain financial products, adult content, etc.)Review Meta's commerce policy for your industry before resubmitting — some categories need special permission regardless of wording
Poor formatting / broken variable syntaxMalformed {{1}} placeholders, or variables not in sequential orderVariables must be numbered sequentially starting at 1, with no gaps — {{1}}, {{2}}, {{3}}, never {{1}}, {{3}}

Category mismatch, in detail — the most common rejection

This is the single most common reason a template gets rejected or, worse, gets auto-approved under the wrong category and then causes billing surprises later (Marketing templates cost roughly 7.5x more per message than Utility). The test Meta actually applies: does this message exist because of something the customer did, or because you want them to do something?

  • "Your order #4521 has shipped" → Utility (the customer placed an order; this confirms it)
  • "20% off everything this weekend only!" → Marketing (nothing the customer did triggered this)
  • "Your order #4521 has shipped — and here's 10% off your next one" → Marketing (the promotional add-on pulls the whole template into Marketing, even though the first half is transactional)

That last example is the trap: mixing a transactional confirmation with any promotional content reclassifies the entire template as Marketing. Keep transactional and promotional content in separate templates.

Before you resubmit

  1. Confirm you're submitting under a new template name — Meta does not allow editing a rejected template in place.
  2. Re-check the category against the test above, not just against what you originally intended.
  3. Read the message out loud — if it sounds like an ad, it's Marketing regardless of category selected.
  4. Check variable numbering is sequential with no gaps.
  5. Confirm any link uses your own full domain, not a shortener.

Frequently asked questions

How long until I know if the resubmission is approved?

Meta's review typically takes 15 minutes to a few hours for most accounts, though it can extend to a day or more during high-volume periods or for accounts with a recent history of rejections.

Will repeated rejections hurt my account?

A pattern of rejected templates can affect your account's quality signals over time, though a single rejection has no lasting effect. Fix and resubmit thoughtfully rather than resubmitting the same content repeatedly with minor tweaks.

Can support tell me exactly why a specific template was rejected?

The rejection reason shown in your WhatsApp Business Manager (or, on LigiComms, in the template's status detail) is Meta's own stated reason — it's usually specific enough to map directly to one row in the table above.
